Fat Grey Sofas and other Diemmas

Greig Burgoine

6 to 28 September 2008

With an MA in painting from the Royal College of Art and numerous works in private and public collections in the UK, Europe and Canada, Burgoyne continues to explore new approaches. In a development from his previous work, the figurative and metaphysical combine as Burgoyne compels the viewer to embrace his fascination for the paradoxical relationship between belief and value.

Burgoyne takes his inspiration from sources as diverse as Romanesque painting and Egyptian art to Sunday newspaper supplement ads, film stills and Soviet–era propaganda. Parallel to this, he gathers the found detritus that is the broken, anonymous and fragmented by-products of contemporary life.

His paintings and drawings are complex and bold, embodying the tensions between permanence and transience, the impact of the future on the past and the subsequent disorientation of our feelings and beliefs.
