LAND

Angie Biltcliffe, Denise Franklin, Sarah Palmer, Judith Rowe

May 2007

A shared passion for the isolated glory of Winchelsea Beach informs this collaborative exhibition of new works by a group of artists whose diverse practice provides a cross fertilisation of ideas and inspires them individually to enter into a creative dynamic.

With respective backgrounds in pottery, ceramics, painting and site specific performance work, the exhibitors in Land spent twenty four hours together at Winchelsea Beach and the resultant work is their response to this experience.

Ceramics from Sarah Palmer have an organic quality, reflecting the ways in which people leave traces and signs on the landscape.  Paintings from Denise Franklin capture the dramatic changes in light as she explores the tones of darkness and light.  Judith Rowe, who has an international reputation as a potter, is here experimenting with photography and the textural qualities of clay and sand whilst Angie Biltcliffe has exchanges the scale of major outdoor visual theatre events for the fine detail of beekeeping and the intimacy of digital film-making made possible with her collaboration with Rebecca Marshall.
