BOUGH
New Paintings
Tom Banks
8 – 30 March
A rare opportunity to see a body of new work from this talented young artist. Working in oils on canvas, Bank’s paintings reflect his fascination with the subtle nuances of light and shade, day and night, natural and artificial.
Inspired by the works of Gerhard Richter and Luc Tuyman, Bank’s use of photographic source material captures specific moments where the play of light on a branch or a leaf has a transformative effect.
Artificial light in the darkness creates shadows that do not exist in the light of day, and Bank’s meticulously executed works thus capture a subtly altered landscape. Working initially with photographs allows Banks to explore the many different ways in which a part of an image can become a whole as the branches and boughs of trees fill his canvases.
