Colour and Soul
Ruth Cowell and Tor Hildyard
7 to 29 June 2008
Two quite different artists come together to present their work in a vibrant celebration of colour incorporating the rich, earthy tones of Hildyard’s mixed media monoprints and the vividly realized landscapes of Cowell’s paintings.
Specialising in figurative oil paintings of landscapes, flowers and still-life, Cowell’s work is inspired by travel and is in private collections in the UK, France, South East Asia and the USA. These latest works are inspired by the Sussex countryside and the coastline of Brittany and resonate with the vibrant use of colour, which distinguishes all her work.
The powerful images in Hildyard’s mixed media monoprints invite the audience to consider the human form as a vessel. There are vessels of different shapes and sizes, some incorporating figures, some not, and in some the figure becomes the vessel. Her forms are potent and deeply expressive of our emotional range: joy, loneliness, isolation and love.
Exhibiting nationally and internationally, Hildyard has been involved in a number of public arts events, including ‘Cow Parade’ painting the ‘Ritz Cow’ for the Ritz Hotel and ‘Essential British Kit’ for Hacketts, as well as submitting postcards to ‘Secrets’ at the RCA.
