OFF-CUTS AND HEROES
Leigh Dyer and Simon Harrison
June 2007
New metal sculptures from Leigh Dyer see the artist return to the exploration of smaller, more personal work after several years concentrating on public art commissions and large outdoor pieces. Dyer's work is mostly in steel and his ability to combine strength with grace and fluidity give his pieces their distinctive resonance. For this exhibition, Dyer has set himself the additional challenge of working literally, with off-cuts, using previously discarded material and translating them into new forms.
The recycled element is complimented by works from Simon Harrison, who's cartoon heroes and villains reflect his concerns about environmental damage and consumer excess. Harrison's skilled draughtsmanship and imagination create a fantasy world inhabited by hybrid creatures, part human, part animal, part technology and science. Following his inaugural exhibition at The Gallery @ Adventure Ecology at the end of last year, Harrison was named as the emerging artist of the week on the Saatchi online website.
