REPEAT ARRANGEMENT
Digital film and photography by Adam Roberts, Pen and ink drawings by Annabel Tilley
6 - 27 January
Working in different media, Roberts and Tilley share a desire to discover the extraordinary in the ordinary. Everyday domestic objects and places are examined in minute detail, the smallest element becomes significant, rhythms, patterns and symmetries emerging from a process of repetition.
Having worked as a filmmaker for many years, Roberts is now investigating suspended narrative in his photography, the moments before and the seconds after the characters are present. Thus inanimate objects resonate anticipation, loss, betrayal. His digital film ‘three’ presented on two screens, is an exploration of pattern and moment where repeated movements create a rhythm and atmosphere beyond the specifics of individual gesture. Unpromising noises, if repeated, can become a composition.
Annabel Tilley’s pen and ink drawings reflect her fascination with the form and structure of items often considered banal. By drawing usually utilitarian items out of their normal context, Tilley allows them to become beautiful and interesting. As well as individual images which can be selected and composed, 130 Scenes from my Hotel Room by the Seaside is a series of detailed and minute pen and ink drawings of the hotel bedroom plumbing and electrical devices, accessed from the internet using the 360-degree viewing device.
