Hidden Depths
Paintings and Monotypes
Richard adams and Jane Beecham

6 to 22 February

The secret worlds explored in ‘Hidden Depths’ are populated by fairies, nymphs, mermaids, angels and a host of other fantastical creatures. They are imagined worlds hidden in the shadows at the bottom of the garden, in the depths of an old river or at the bottom of the sea. They are worlds you won’t see if you look too hard.

Adams’ richly detailed scenes and vivid figurative works are subtly subversive, celebrating the eccentric and the surreal, reflecting his on-going imaginative exploration of life in rural East Sussex.

Printmaker Jane Beecham celebrates the landscape of flotsam left by the tideline, the natural compositions of stones, pebbles and sand. She is also drawn to the multitude of colours and tones reflected in the various depths and shadows of rock pools. These formations are then magnified back in the studio. Overprinting in three colours creates a complexity and depth of colour in the resulting images, which contain a luminance unique to the method and resonant with her subject matter.
