MERMAIDS' GARDEN
Richard Adams and Jane Beecham
February 2007
An exhibition of new work by Rye based artists Richard Adams and Jane Beecham.
Since moving from London in the mid 1990's, Richard Adams has been transforming his experiences of local life into the quirky and often comic scenes of his paintings. Renowned for his rural and coastal themes, Adams is a prolific and much sought after artist. His views of everyday life are richly detailed, often subtly surreal, the vivid, figurative work joining in a longstanding tradition of eccentric, visionary art encompassing artists such as Richard Dadd and Stanley Spencer.
Printmaker Jane Beecham makes full colour monotypes using only three inks, red, blue and yellow. The process is subtractive and the resulting print is a reverse image. The complexity, depth and detail Beecham achieves, as well as the range of colours she finds are testament to years of experimentation. Beecham's work reflects a number of influences from the skyscrapers of New York to the sands at Camber. A series of deep blue pebbles are both sculptural and evocative of the fifties textile designs which Beecham has also looked to as a sourse of inspiration.
